The author, Gerardo Chávez García, was born in San Antonio de los Baños, Havana, Cuba. During an afternoon of nostalgic memories, he realized that he and his grandfather had a certain similarity in their youth; they both left their homeland alone before turning 21, leaving the entire family behind. That decision they made, each in their own time and circumstances, intrigued him. He knew what his motives were, the risks and the difficulties he had to face to achieve his goal. What he did not know was how his grandfather had managed to cross the Atlantic leaving the Canary Islands and settling in Cuba.
Knowing that it was already too late to obtain details of the first years of his grandfather's life, he thought that perhaps someday in the distant future, when his granddaughters were his age, they could be in a similar position, wanting to know details of how he managed to escape from communist tyranny, and how he managed to start his life in the United States. It was because of this, a little over two years ago, that he took on the task of writing down his memories, concentrating on those that he thought might interest them in the future.
The grandfather briefly describes the people of his family that they did not meet. He tells them about his healthy and, at times, daring childhood, adolescence, and youth and about his environment. Why he felt forced to abandon his unforgettable native island, his failed attempts to escape, why he arrived in Jamaica, alone, with his heart in his mouth, how he survived there. Finally, he tells them about his arrival in Miami. Why days later he began his journey north, the experiences lived during the almost three-monthjourney to New York, where his story ends when he turned 21 years old in 1961.
